    개요

Heathcliff arrives at Wuthering Heights as a dark-eyed foundling brought by Mr. Earnshaw from the streets of Liverpool, setting in motion a chain of events that will consume two generations. He grows up alongside Catherine Earnshaw on the windswept moors, forging a bond so intense it defies the social barriers separating them from their neighbors at Thrushcross Grange. When Catherine chooses to marry Edgar Linton for his wealth and status instead of her soulmate, a heartbroken Heathcliff vanishes into the night, only to return years later as a wealthy man bent on destroying both families.

The narrative unfolds through a complex frame story told by Lockwood, a tenant at Thrushcross Grange, and Nelly Dean, the housekeeper who witnessed the original tragedy. This structure allows the reader to piece together the history of the Earnshaws and Lintons while observing how Heathcliff manipulates marriages and inherits properties to exact revenge on Hareton Earnshaw and young Cathy Linton. The cycle of cruelty eventually collapses with the deaths of the older generation, leaving the younger lovers to find peace among the graves where the spirits of Heathcliff and Catherine are said to wander.

Emily Brontë wrote this single novel under the pseudonym Ellis Bell before publishing it in December 1847 alongside her sister Anne's Agnes Grey. Thomas Cautley Newby released the three-volume set in London, though contemporary critics dismissed the work as coarse and vulgar due to its raw violence and moral ambiguity. Charlotte Brontë edited a second edition in 1850 after Emily died of tuberculosis at age 30, adding a preface to defend the book while softening some of the dialect for Victorian readers.
