Sound! Euphonium

Kitauji High School in Uji, Kyoto, has spent years settling for mediocrity in its brass band club until a new advisor arrives to demand excellence. Kumiko Oumae enters the school with no intention of playing her euphonium again after a bitter conflict with her middle school director, but she finds herself pulled back into the music when the club decides to compete for the national championship. The story tracks her first year as she navigates the intense pressure of ensemble performance while dealing with the complex social dynamics of her peers.

The novels delve deep into the mechanics of wind instruments and the specific hierarchy of Japanese school clubs without relying on caricatured archetypes. Ayano Takeda presents characters with genuine flaws and evolving motivations, focusing on small resonant moments like the sound of tuning or the silence before a performance rather than melodramatic plot twists. This approach builds toward powerful climaxes that feel earned through the grueling reality of practice and the emotional growth required to find one's own sound.

The series spans three years of high school life across multiple volumes, with English translations handled by Yen Press. It includes short story collections and side stories focusing on secondary characters like Hazuki Katou and Sapphire Kawashima. As of 2024, the franchise has sold over 2 million copies worldwide, becoming a landmark work in contemporary light fiction known for its realistic depiction of concert band culture. [편집]
