Denis Villeneuve's Sicario drops viewers into the brutal, morally murky world of the U.S.-Mexico drug war. Shaken but determined, Kate volunteers for a shadowy Department of Defense task force led by the smug, sunglasses-wearing Matt Graver, who operates with no clear chain of command and dismisses legal niceties. She is also introduced to the mysterious Alejandro Gillick, a Colombian former prosecutor whose past and allegiances remain deliberately opaque.

The central conflict pits Kate's commitment to lawful procedure against the task force's extrajudicial tactics. Matt explains their mission: dramatically overreact to create chaos, shake the tree, and force the Sonora Cartel's elusive leader Fausto Alarcon to surface. The story's central beats include the revelation that the real target is Alarcon, not his lieutenant Diaz; a tense surveillance operation following a corrupt Mexican state police officer named Silvio; and a climactic night-vision raid on an underground drug tunnel connecting Mexico to the United States. During this raid, Kate witnesses Alejandro execute prisoners in cold blood, shattering her remaining illusions. When she tries to arrest him, Alejandro shoots her twice in the chest, both bullets hitting her body armor, and whispers the word Medellín, a clue that will unlock the conspiracy.
