Mitchell was born Shannon, though she has gone by Shay since childhood. Before entering the entertainment industry, she trained as a competitive swimmer for 13 years and briefly considered an Olympic bid. A small tattoo of the letter B on her wrist honors her daughter Atlas, whose middle name is Babel. She holds a license as a scuba diver and suffers from a fear of flying, a phobia that directly inspired the creation of her travel gear brand, BÉIS. In 2012, she appeared in the music video for The Wanted's song Glad You Came and is fluent in Tagalog. A defining legend of her career involves the acquisition of an 85% stake in BÉIS by Samsonite for $210 million.
