Needles and Pins

Jackie DeShannon first brought "Needles and Pins" to life on April 11, 1963, releasing it as a single through Liberty Records. Dick Glasser produced the track, which blended rock, folk, and soul into a tight two-and-a-half-minute performance. While the song only reached number 47 on the US Billboard Hot 100, its distinctive guitar riff and melancholic lyrics about unrequited love established a template that countless artists would later follow.

The British beat group The Searchers transformed the song into a global phenomenon with their January 7, 1964 release. Recorded at Pye Studios in London under Tony Hatch's production, their jangle-pop version hit number one on the UK Singles Chart. This definitive take ran slightly shorter than DeShannon's original at just over two minutes and appeared on their debut album It's the Searchers. Today the track has accumulated over 43.8 million streams on Spotify.

Decades after its initial release, the song remains a staple for diverse musicians ranging from punk pioneers to soft rock legends. Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers captured a celebrated live version featuring Stevie Nicks at The Forum in Los Angeles during June 1981, later including it on their 1985 album Pack up the Plantation: Live!. The Ramones recorded a cover that retained the raw attitude of DeShannon's original, while Cher, Smokie, and Willy DeVille also contributed notable interpretations across pop and alternative genres.
