Maybe Tomorrow

Released on April 12, 1971, Maybe Tomorrow marked a deliberate pivot for The Jackson 5. Following the massive success of their previous single "I'll Be There," the group and their producers at Motown decided to lean heavily into slower, more emotionally resonant ballads. The Corporation handled most of the production duties alongside veteran producer Hal Davis, while Gene Page and James Anthony Carmichael crafted the lush string and horn arrangements that define the album's polished, adult-contemporary sound.

The title track opens the record with a four-and-a-half-minute runtime, featuring Michael Jackson on lead vocals against a backdrop of sitar and sweeping strings. This orchestral approach continues throughout the album, moving away from the frantic energy of their earlier funk hits. Jermaine Jackson steps out from behind his brother's shadow to sing lead on "She's Good," offering a rare spotlight during this era. Other standout moments include Clifton Davis's "Never Can Say Goodbye" and the gentle vocal performance on "Petals."
