This spider is approximately four millimeters long. The display fan you are looking at is smaller than your smallest fingernail. And yet it contains more color complexity more geometric precision and more biological artistry than most things humans have deliberately created for the purpose of being beautiful. The male peacock spider raises this fan dances on his two front legs and performs a carefully choreographed courtship routine for the female. If she is not impressed she eats him. The most high-stakes art performance in the natural world executed at a scale invisible to the naked eye. Evolution producing beauty for an audience of one. 🕷️🌈
